Who we are
Hello my name is Roy Mclean-Reece I have been a nurse for over 17 years and in my wonderful career of taking care of the elderly I feel its a natural progression to assist in end of life needs. In my role as a death doula I will not be offering any medical advice, but I find it an asset to have this knowledge to better serve our clients.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an End-of-Life Doula?
Many of us associate the term 'doula' with those planning a birth. The word originates from the Greek and literally means 'servant'. This servant role is now being shared with those who know death is on the horizon.
What is the role of an End-of-Life Doula?
End-of-life doulas provide non-medical support during the death process. My role is to take the burden off of you and your family in the practical and emotional details of what needs to be navigated at the end of life. This may be assisting in the creation of your advanced planning details or companionship, to planning a living memorial or sitting vigil at the time of death.
Why do I need an End-of-Life Doula?
Doulas offer extensive practical end of life support with a holistic focus. This focus encompasses the entire person, including their mental, emotional and spiritual readiness to face death. Facing death is a reality for all of us. My doula training is specifically Christian focused, although my services are not limited to just those in the faith. I desire to help you live fully to the end and alleviate the burden for you and your family in the details involved with end of life planning. Doulas can also be helpful to lower funeral costs by providing alternative options for disposition and funeral planning.
What Services do you Provide?
Services can be tailored to each individual family's needs. My support can begin as early as an initial diagnosis, at any point throughout the dying process, or even after the death of a loved one. The sooner the relationship begins, the more we can develop trust and rapport. Part of my role is to anticipate what needs will arise ahead of time, so they can be addressed in a timely fashion.
Some people only desire Advanced Care Planning support. This a perfect opportunity to bring to light all of the aspects of end of life planning that need to be addressed and documented, so your wishes are honoured and your family is not left guessing what your desires are during a difficult time.
My dying loved one is not open to a death doula, but I need support. Can I still work with you?
Absolutely. I am here to help you and your family by bringing a calm presence as you navigate end of life care for the one you love.
What services are End-of-Life Doulas not able to provide?
As a non-medical practitioner I DO NOT provide medical care of any kind nor administer medications. I am not a housekeeper, although some light duties can be included if needed. I am also unable to provide any legal advice. If something falls out of my scope of practice I will refer you to professionals and community resources in your area.
My role as your doula is not to impose my values or judgements upon you. I am not able to make decisions for you, but I am there to help you navigate your options and find your voice to communicate your end of life desires.
